Health

Health is strongly linked to education and income: good health allows children to learn better and adults to increase their income through productive work. Conversely, health problems often lead to increased school absences among children (a predictor of dropping out of high school), as well as increased on-the-job absences by adults. To further complicate matters, entry level and lower paying jobs are often without health benefits. A lack of health care coverage often means that primary care—which is important to preventing or treating illness before it becomes more serious—is an unattainable luxury.

To help ensure residents have access to affordable prescriptions, United Way of SLO County is distributing FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Cards and Coast2Coast Rx Prescription Drug Discount Cards to anyone who does not have health insurance or needs medication not covered by their insurance. While the cards cannot be combined, families or individuals can ask a participating pharmacy to use the card that gives the greatest discount. Use the links below to download Coast2Coast Rx and FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards.

United Way is excited to be starting a new program aimed at teaching children and adults how to communicate compassionately and simultaneously, to avoid violent behaviors. This initial course in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is designed for teachers and parents, though anyone incorporate NVC into their daily lives. Visit the NVC page for more information.
