United Way would like to recognize Dioptics Medical Products, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing Corporation and Promega Biosciences for hosting the Community Impact Fund volunteer grant panel reviews. These organizations provided meeting space for our three grant panels to hold discussions and review applications for grant awards in the areas of education, financial stability and health. We thank these community partners for assisting United Way in bringing people together to make a difference in our communities.

Local professionals inspire unity in community…United Way would like to send a gracious thank you to Ms. Annie Shanks and a hearty high five to Mr. Aaron Steed and his team from Meathead Movers, Inc. for their recent donations. Ms. Shanks contributed a very nice oak desk to replace one located in the United Way office that is imitation wood, well worn and held together with the help of duct tape! Mr. Steed agreed to donate the moving services to transport the donated desk to its new home. We thank both of these business owners who demonstrate their support of United Way and their community through their generosity and giving spirit.

United Way of SLO County received a total of 57 applications for Community Impact Fund grant awards, submitted from 42 different nonprofit agencies. The total amount of requests was $421,971 and there is $170,000 in available funds from United Way that can be awarded this year. The applications were reviewed by volunteer grant readers, representing a cross section of the SLO County community. Three individual grant panels reviewed the applications in the areas of Education, Financial Stability and Health. The panels are in the process of making their final recommendations to the United Way Community Impact Committee, which will then make its recommendation to the Board of Directors. Grant awards will be announced on or around June 1.

United Way of SLO County would like to thank the members of the community who are serving as this year's Community Impact Fund volunteer grant readers

United Way of SLO County has recognized the need for collaborative partnerships to help eliminate many of our community’s most pressing health and human service issues. The new Community Collaboration Grant aims to pinpoint - and eventually eliminate - the root causes of issues affecting our county by awarding $75,000 to a group that is focused on the amelioration of a particular issue. After careful review and consideration of 24 Letters of Interest submitted to us, our volunteer task force has determined that programs that serve children and youth are of particular interest; by nature, if we care for and educate our children, they will become responsible, compassionate adults who will be better equipped to deal with the challenges that life sometimes provides.
With this understanding, we have invited any of the original agencies that submitted Letters of Interest for programs that help children and youth achieve their potential to submit a formal proposal. Applicants are strongly encouraged to re-evaluate their programs based on the criteria established by the research of William Oswald, Ph.D. in order to more thoroughly address amelioration of root causes. Applicants are also encouraged to work more collaboratively with other local organizations in order to have the greatest impact on the community; to this end, programs may include partners that were not included in the original Letter of Interest. (A list of program descriptons and collaborative partners is available below.) A Proposal Form can be downloaded from the link below; all proposals must be received at the United Way office (not postmarked) no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16. If you have questions regarding your program or proposal, please contact Rick London at (805) 541-1234, ext. 12.
