Memorial Donation Supports Youth Programs

United Way of San Luis Obispo County has received a $10,000 donation in memory of the late Lawrence E. Baur, Jr., CPA. The transformational gift will support United Way’s Imagination Library and Money Talks programs, increasing reading literacy and financial literacy among San Luis Obispo County children and youth.

The gift enabled United Way to enroll more than 50 additional children to the Imagination Library, distributing an additional 1,800 books to children, who range in age from birth to 5 years old. Each month these children receive a new, age appropriate book delivered directly to their home.

United Way will also teach Money Talks financial literacy classes at four area high schools to over 500 high school seniors. Classes are taught by volunteers with a finance background, and include topics such as understanding credit, savings, and insurance.

Baur, a Cal Poly professor and certified public accountant in San Luis Obispo for nearly 40 years before his untimely death in 2003, was highly esteemed as a dedicated teacher and professional. A spokesperson for the donors, Friends of Larry Baur, CPA, described him as "committed to the success of his university students and his clients. His wise counsel helped hundreds of individuals, organizations and small businesses in San Luis Obispo County to handle financial management and tax planning effectively. This gift in his memory will honor that legacy and help to extend the impact of his work to the next generation."

United Way of San Luis Obispo County CEO Rick London said, “This gift in honor of Larry Baur, by friends who treasured their time with him, truly touches the core of giving from the heart. Not only is this given in loving memory, but this gift will go on to inspire, educate, and provide a foundation for life for hundreds of children and young people in the County of San Luis Obispo. The things that Larry believed in, taught, and respected will live on through those young people because his friends cherished his memory and wanted him not to be forgotten. I cannot think of any more loving or thoughtful way to remember someone that is important in your life than to honor their beliefs and passion by passing those things along to others, as ripples in a pond. United Way of San Luis Obispo County is most honored to be a part of this gift, and we take the responsibility for stewarding these funds with the utmost care and commitment.”
